Welcome

WELCOME

Hiwide Transport, Inc is a professional, experienced mover and forwarder of Heavy Equipment and Machinery. Our specialty is the use of railroads to achieve the lowest cost scenarios but we also use trucks to achieve the quickest timeframes, when warranted. Why railroad? Frequently, what is a wide load or heavy load (sometimes called a Super Load) for a truck is a standard everday move for the railroads.

For example: A six axle tired, mobile Liebherr crane might weigh near 150,000 lbs. with counterweights, with a width of 10 foot and a bumper to bumper length of 40 foot or more and a height of 13 foot.

This is a wide, heavy load for every state when trucked and will require both permits and escorts, sometimes even police escort and night time only moves. This adds to the cost, creates delay and the heavy haul trailer required with a deck length (also called "The Well") long enough for such a move might be booked well into the future, further these trailers are not abundant in the USA adding a premium to the move. Also, frequently the crane must be dismantled into pieces both by law and practicality adding to the overall cost, as there is the cost of disassembly and additional trucks.

This same crane, however, is not considered even a significant move by the railroads - it is a standard everyday flat car readily available and there are no special requirements for such a move. The crane is often simply driven up an end ramp onto the rail car, then strapped (rigged) and sent on its way. No disassembly, no extra trucks, no additional cost. We can and frequently do handle an end to end move of this type by railroad saving our clients significant money, often thousands of dollars. Our clients wishes and concerns are paramount in formulating "the best" logistics plan. This insures the quickest delivery possible at the lowest cost.

Equipment Moved

EQUIPMENT MOVED

We have experience in moving all types of heavy construction and mining equipment whether it is a Cat D7 Dozer, Hitachi EX1200 Excavator , Liebherr LTM1120 Crane or Manitowoc crawler crane. We have moved equipment made by:
Cat / Caterpillar, John Deere, Grove, Hitachi, Komatsu, Liebherr, Manitowoc, P&H, Tadano, Terex, Terex Demag, Volvo
among many others. You can be assured that if you're moving the smallest Skid Steer by LTL truck to the largest P&H crane by railroad we have the expertise to accomplish the mission. In addtion, we have experience in Steel Tanks, Transformers, Locomotives, Machine Presses and other large heavy pieces.

Crane Transport

Crane Transport

A special note on cranes. Most large wheeled mobile cranes make an ideal load for rail cargo. Rail freight rates have what we call "sweet spots" where the closer we come to certain physical dimensions for the rail cargo itself, the lower the overall rail costs become when we factor in loading, rigging and getting the crane to and from the rail yard. Generally the longer the rail heavy haul and the heavier the crane (particularly for wide loads aka super loads), the more cost benefit is achieved over trucking. This is the reason we used a crane in the example above and why so many of the manufacturers listed are crane manufacturing companies. Mobile cranes frequently hit this "Sweet Spot". This is NOT to say other types of equipment cannot do equally well in terms of overall rail cost effectiveness, among these but not limited to these are: articulated trucks, bulldozers, excavators and shovels, loaders (both tracked and wheeled), scrapers and even some large agricultural tractors.

From a crane transport perspective, the easiest to move are wheeled cranes, followed by crawler cranes and then tower cranes. Crawler cranes tend to need disassembly due to their wide footprint, thus necessitating removal of the frames (likewise true for many tracked types like excavators and sometimes though rarely bulldozers). This then requires us to load the rail cars by using another crane. Tower cranes always need disassembly but their bulkiness rather than actual compacted weight make them less attractive for rail, as they will need to be loaded by another crane and the sheer number of pieces requires more rigging and maybe more rail cars. Railroad logistics is as much art as science and there are many factors to consider before a plan comes to fruition. This means a "quick" rail quote may take several days sometimes.

Auctions

AUCTIONS

Many of our clients purchase equipment from Auctioneers like:
Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, Yoder & Frey, Stephen Passy and others. We can arrange to both drop-off or pick-up equipment from any of their various locations. We frequently provide clients with a transportation estimate prior to an auction so total cost can be considered in the purchase. All too often people get emotional at an auction and purchase equipment without considering the cost of relocating the equipment, so what seemed to be a great buy becomes a white elephant. Don't let this happen to you. CALL US FIRST! All of our quotes are free, so don't hesitate to use us.
